Katherine Bradford, a well known American artist I admire, only once commented on Instagram under one of my small paintings - enough - and this brief comment stayed with me. A powerful and seemingly simple word. I love the sound of it and the triggers when I say it out loud. It makes me think of: enough it’s great, done, adequate, saying enough, unpretentious, light, simple, sober, sufficient, ample, fair, plenty, working in a reduced manner, humble or modest. enough also associates with graciousness, forgiving, tenderness and being humane. Giving permission to ourselves to let it be or let it go, to love.
As an artist I think about enough often while working. The tightrope walk between doing too much and just enough. Figuring out the ‘sweet-spot’ that moves us with all its force, while looking at a work of art.
The 7 artists I chose for this exhibition address enough in differing ways. The conversation between the artists intensifies the telling of enough.
